Raymond Rutting

Raymond Rutting (Utrecht, 1962) set out as a photo journalist in 1985. He was affiliated with the ANP for a long time and is currently working for De Volkskrant. His photo's have appeared in world-renowned newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Guardian, Stem and National Geographic.

 

Over the years, he has developed a unique style, which is influencing the work of a new generation of photo journalists. His work received numerous awards, including in several categories of the Silver Camera Awards. He was twice voted Photo Journalist of the Year (in 1997 and 2004). In 2005, he was appointed Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau.

 

During a tour of Congo, Sudan, Uganda and Congo again, Rutting portrayed the people he met on his travels. The austere backgrounds to his photo's highlight their personalities and lets them shine. His approach recalls the state portraits of the 17th century. Rutting's confronting images show man's ability to survive, even in the direst of conflicts.
